Eating well does not have to mean buying expensive imported ingredients, following complicated diets or giving up the food you grew up loving. Sometimes, a better approach to healthy food begins with a few small changes to your regular meals.

Think about your everyday plate. There may be roti, dal, rice, vegetables, curd or a quick breakfast before work. These familiar foods can already form part of a balanced diet. Adding variety through nutrient-rich ingredients can make your meals more interesting and help you meet your nutritional needs. That is where superfoods enter the conversation.

What are superfoods, really?

“Superfood” is a popular term used for foods that contain useful nutrients, such as fibre, protein, vitamins, minerals or healthy fats. It is not a formal medical category, and no single food can provide everything your body needs.

The goal is not to eat one magical ingredient. It is to build a varied diet that works with your lifestyle, preferences and budget.

Five superfoods you can try in your kitchen

1. Chia seeds

Chia seeds are rich in fibre and provide plant-based omega-3 fatty acids. Their mild flavour makes them easy to incorporate into everyday food.

Try soaking them and adding them to curd, a homemade breakfast bowl or a fruit-based pudding. If you are new to chia seeds, begin with a small serving and drink enough fluids.

2. Flaxseed

Flaxseed provides fibre and plant-based omega-3 fatty acids. Ground flaxseed is often easier to use than whole seeds because grinding helps make its nutrients more accessible.

Mix a little into homemade chutney powder, sprinkle it over curd or add it to suitable roti and pancake recipes.

3. Pumpkin seeds

Pumpkin seeds provide protein, healthy fats and minerals such as magnesium and zinc. Keep a small container of them in your kitchen for adding to salads, poha or homemade snack mixes.

4. Lentils and chickpeas

You do not need to look far for nourishing ingredients. Moong dal, masoor dal and chickpeas are familiar Indian staples that provide protein and fibre.

Use them in dal, chana salad, soups, chillas or simple one-pot meals.

5. Fruits and vegetables

Seasonal fruits and vegetables offer different combinations of vitamins, minerals and fibre. Rotate your choices rather than relying on only one fruit or vegetable every day.

Bananas, guavas, carrots, spinach and sweet potatoes can all fit into a varied eating pattern.

How to start without changing your entire diet

Try one small addition at a time. Add seeds to breakfast, include dal or chickpeas in lunch, and make vegetables a regular part of dinner. Plan around ingredients your family already enjoys.

Healthy eating becomes easier when it feels practical, not punishing.
